Vacuum Ejectors and Eductors

Ejectors and eductors harness motive-fluid energy to generate vacuum, entrain process vapors, and move gases through demanding services without reliance on rotating equipment.

Overview

Ejector and Eductor Technology for Reliable Process Vacuum.

Motive-fluid pressure is converted into high-velocity flow to create controlled suction for process vacuum applications. As steam, gas, vapor, or liquid passes through the nozzle, process gases or vapors are entrained and carried with the motive stream toward the required discharge condition. The combined stream then enters a diffuser, where velocity is converted back into pressure.
This principle gives engineers a durable way to move condensables, non-condensables, limited liquid carryover, and small amounts of solids with minimal mechanical complexity. With no moving parts, ejectors and eductors offer low-maintenance performance, broad material flexibility, and practical integration into demanding process environments. Depending on the motive medium and geometry, these devices may generate vacuum, compress vapor, induce gas flow, transfer liquid, or circulate process material.
For new systems, replacements, or upgrades to existing equipment, Artisan supplies ejector and eductor units shaped around the motive source, suction load, vacuum requirement, discharge pressure, and material demands of the application. The offering draws from JET-VAC® Technologies and Unique Systems®’ expertise while remaining fully integrated into Artisan’s vacuum products platform for chemical, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, power, edible oil, nutraceutical, petrochemical, and waste reduction applications.

Vacuum Heritage

Rooted in the legacy engineering of JET-VAC® Technologies and Unique Systems®, Artisan’s ejector and eductor capabilities include steam jet ejectors, gas-motivated ejectors, liquid-motivated eductors, air-motivated ejectors, hydrojets, process-vapor-powered ejectors, and specialty material configurations for corrosive process environments.

Steam-Motivated Ejectors

Steam jet ejectors are among the simplest and most reliable forms of vacuum-producing equipment. They use high-pressure motive steam to evacuate gases and vapors from a process vessel, column, evaporator, dryer, or other vacuum service without mechanical motion.
Inside the ejector, motive steam enters at high pressure and passes through a converging-diverging nozzle. As the steam expands, pressure energy is converted into velocity energy, creating a high-velocity, low-pressure stream. This low-pressure region draws process gases or vapors from the suction side, entrains them into the motive stream, and carries the combined flow through the diffuser, where velocity is converted back into pressure for discharge.

Steam jet ejectors can be supplied as single-stage units or as part of multi-stage arrangements when deeper vacuum levels are required. Single-stage ejectors commonly serve moderate-vacuum duties, while multi-stage systems divide the required compression across two or more ejectors. Intercondensers may be placed between stages to condense motive steam and process vapor, limiting the load handled by the following stage. The number of stages is determined by the required vacuum level and discharge pressure, while the process load determines the size of each stage.

Liquid-Motivated Eductors

Eductors operate on the same motive-fluid principle as ejectors, but the term is generally used when the motive fluid is a liquid rather than a gas or vapor. High-pressure liquid, most often water or a compatible process liquid, passes through a nozzle and accelerates into a high-velocity stream. That velocity creates suction, entrains gases or vapors from the process side, and produces vacuum or movement through the connected system.
Depending on the application, a liquid-motivated eductor may entrain gas, circulate another liquid, lift fluid, evacuate equipment, or induce draft. A water-operated unit optimized for deeper gas entrainment and vacuum generation is often referred to as a hydrojet.
Process compatibility can make eductors a practical choice where liquid handling, corrosion resistance, or motive-fluid selection is central to the application. They can be fabricated from corrosion-resistant materials for chemically aggressive environments and configured for service across Artisan’s process industries.

Where a liquid motive source is already available, eductors generate vacuum or entrain vapors without the added complexity of mechanical equipment. Because the motive liquid contacts the entrained stream, fluid compatibility, discharge handling, and potential contamination must be evaluated as part of equipment selection.

Air-Motivated Ejectors

Air-motivated ejectors use plant compressed air as the motive fluid, offering a compact, simple way to generate vacuum where steam is unavailable or where compressed air is the most practical energy source on site. Requiring no electrical power at the device, they operate on the same principle as other ejectors: compressed air expands through the nozzle, creates a high-velocity stream, entrains the suction gas, and discharges the combined flow through the diffuser.

With no moving parts and low maintenance requirements, air-motivated ejectors produce vacuum, induce airflow, exhaust gases, and convey lightweight materials using energy already available in the plant’s compressed-air system.

Process Gas-Motivated Ejectors

Gas-motivated ejectors are driven by a compressible gas motive source, making them suitable for applications where air, hydrocarbons, process vapors, or other gases are already available within the plant utility or process environment.
This configuration is especially useful where steam is not available, where steam introduction could affect the process, or where an existing process or utility gas can serve as the motive source. As with steam jet ejectors, the motive gas expands through a nozzle, creates a high-velocity stream, entrains the suction gas, and discharges the mixed stream at the required pressure.
Compressed-air and process gas-motivated ejectors create vacuum, induce airflow, exhaust gases, or transfer process vapors without electrical power at the device. Motive media may include nitrogen, hydrogen, natural gas, recycled vapor, flare gas, or solvent vapor, allowing available process energy to circulate or compress gas without introducing water or another foreign material. Where the motive vapor is recoverable with the process solvent, the arrangement may also simplify separation and reuse.

Artisan tailors gas-motivated ejectors around project-specific pressure, flow, material, and process requirements, including services where compatibility with the gas stream is critical.

Materials & Integration

Ejector and eductor performance depends on more than the motive fluid. The required vacuum level, suction load, discharge pressure, condensable content, corrosion profile, solids or liquid carryover, and utility limitations all influence the final design. Motive-fluid pressure and temperature, gas composition, compression ratio, allowable pressure drop, and operating turndown also affect nozzle, mixing-chamber, and diffuser geometry.
Artisan supplies ejectors and eductors in a broad range of materials to match the operating environment. Options can include carbon steel, stainless steel, Alloy 2205, Hastelloy®, titanium, and other alloys. For corrosive services, special materials and designs are available, including impervious graphite impregnated with phenolic resin where appropriate.

Individual ejectors and eductors are available for replacement service, system upgrades, or integration into larger vacuum systems. They may also be incorporated into multi-stage ejector systems, condensing systems, hybrid ejector and liquid ring vacuum pump packages, or specialty process systems. Replacement equipment should be matched to the existing suction, motive, and discharge conditions rather than selected from connection size alone.
