Challenging Distillation

Advanced distillation technologies engineered for difficult separations, delivering pure overhead and bottoms streams from foaming, fouling, and thermally sensitive materials across chemical, pharmaceutical, and food applications.

Overview

From Feed Stream to Pure Separation in a Single Integrated System

When a conventional column can’t hold up to a fouling, plugging, or foaming material, the separation suffers – degraded product, lost yield, and unplanned downtime for cleaning. Artisan’s distillation technologies address the full spectrum of these challenges, from single-stage evaporation to fully integrated column systems

Artisan’s Rototherm® supports this in many ways. it can run as a single-stage distillation unit on its own, or serve as a high-efficiency column reboiler, evaporating volatiles from bottoms residue to improve yield and reduce overhead product losses. It’s equally effective at pre-removing heavy residue or solids from a feed stream so the column receives a clean vapor feed.

For processes requiring a final stripping step, the  Evaporator/Stripperâ„¢ removes residual volatiles from heat-sensitive, viscous, foaming, or solids-containing products under high vacuum with short residence time.

When solvent dehydration, azeotropic mixtures, or water-limited reactions limit conventional distillation, pervaporation adds a membrane-based path for selectively removing water or other permeating components under vacuum.

For fractionation, Artisan’s Dualflo Trays help obtain pure overhead and bottoms streams in applications involving foaming or fouling materials, and are widely used in processing materials that challenge conventional tray or packing designs.

Together, these technologies give Artisan the flexibility to address challenging distillation and purification requirements across a wide range of industries and material types, with system designs focused on efficiency, product quality, and yield preservation.

Key Benefits

Consistent product quality and yield

Controlled residence time and efficient heat transfer preserve product integrity and minimize degradation, delivering repeatable purity and yield across production runs.

Efficient handling of difficult materials

The Rototherm® and Dualflo® Trays help solve complex separations involving residue removal, single-stage distillation, and fractionation of foaming or fouling materials.

Customizable to specific process needs

Artisan engineers configure each system, including tray geometry, operating pressure, and feed integration, around your specific material properties and separation requirements.

Selective separation beyond conventional distillation limits

Pervaporation targets water or other permeating components from liquid streams, making it useful for solvent drying, azeotrope management, and separation steps where distillation becomes inefficient or constrained by mixture behavior.

Applications

Fractionation of complex chemical mixtures

Artisan distillation technology separates multi-component chemical streams where fouling, foam formation, close-boiling components, or challenging material behavior can limit conventional distillation performance.

Removal of residue upstream of pharmaceutical spent solvent recycling

The Rototherm® removes solids or heavy residue before solvent recovery to protect equipment and preserve solvent quality. Pervaporation can further address water content or azeotropic limits beyond conventional distillation.

Purification of food and pharmaceutical additives and components

Artisan distillation technologies purify food and pharmaceutical components where consistent overhead and bottoms stream quality are essential. When residual volatile removal is required, the Evaporator/Stripperâ„¢ can strip volatiles from heat-sensitive, foaming, solids-containing, and viscous products under deep vacuum.

Solvent dehydration and azeotrope separation

Pervaporation dewaters alcohols, organic solvents, and pharmaceutical process streams where low water content, solvent reuse, or azeotrope breaking is central to the separation objective.

Water removal from equilibrium-limited reactions

In esterification and similar reaction systems, selective water removal can shift the reaction toward higher conversion while reducing downstream separation load.

Artisan's Distillation Technology. Your Application.

Every challenging distillation application brings distinct material and process requirements. Artisan’s engineering team can review your feed characteristics and separation objectives to identify the right solution. Where membrane-based separation is part of the evaluation, pervaporation performance is shaped by membrane selection, solvent chemistry, water content, operating temperature, vacuum conditions, flow rate, and the required separation target.
